CertainTeed slider lock broken

Handy Person from Maryland
The lock mechanism on my CertainTeed sliding glass door broke in the locked position and I had to cut the two bolts that were anchored into the frame to get the door open. Is a replacement lock mechanism available. If so, will I need to remove the door to replace the lock. I ask about removing the door because it looks like there is a rod inside the frame that comes down from the top of the door and screws into the lock mechanism. Thanks, Vince

Thank you for reaching out to us. The best option we can offer is a new surface mount handle set like our 82-005 with 4-15/16" hole center spacing. Keep in mind that you would most likely need to drill new installation holes and you would need space to install the keeper to the door jamb. Take a look at the related video and see if you think that this could work for you.

Thanks for the quick response. This sounds like a good option for my situation. In order to drill holes to attach this new handle assembly I assume that I'll need to remove the old lock mechanism that's still within the door frame.

Do you know how I can do this? Looking at the lock mechanism through the opening in the edge of the door I think I can see a metal rod extending down from the top of the door that threads into the lock mechanism which keeps it in place. Do you know if I need to remove the door to unthread this rod which will allow me to remove the old lock mechanism? Thanks

After having another look at your patio door, I'm wondering if you could use the 82-260 mortise lock along with the 82-249 keeper and 82-086 handle set. However, I don't know if this would work. It depends entirely on how you're able to remove the mortise and how much of it is removed. Even then, there's no guarantee this set up will work.

You say there is a metal rod that comes down from the top of the door and threads into the lock. I'm not sure, but you might need to remove the door out of the track to access the top of the rod to unscrew it or detach it from the lock. We've related some videos on this page on patio doors to get some ideas on the repair. Take a look and see what you think.
