Clarification - Andersen balance

A handy person from bel air, md says:
Just pulled a bad balance out of my son-in-law's window. Window is an Andersen narrowline cottage style. Balance is clearly labeled as L8/1227. BUT....according to your website, this numbered balance is used on the LEFT side looking from the EXTERIOR. This balance came out of the LEFT side looking from the INSIDE. So, not sure what I should be ordering for a replacement (and I certainly don't want to take apart another window - that side jamb liner design is the most idiotic thing I've seen). Thanks for your assistance.

I understand your confusion, Andersen's manual states the direction of the window is done from the outside looking in. If the window worked before the balance broke, than I recommend replacing it with our 24-L8-1227. However if it was broken before your son-in-law bought the house, then it might be because the former owner installed the incorrect balance box and should have used the 24-R12-827.
