Looking for right coil balance
I have a single coil balance in my window. You can't exactly tell in the photo, but the coil actually snapped and the casing is broken. The one you see in the window is the right side coil which is not broken. Can I just replace this with the S140? Thanks!
This doesn't look like the Series 140. This looks more like an 15-177 Pivot Shoe, which uses our Series 152 Coil Balances. You'll need to look for stamps on each spring to figure out what spring weights you need. If you're unsure, give us the exact weight of the window sash, and we'd be happy to work it out for you.
17 pounds is a bit of an awkward weight, since you have to divide that by half to get the right strength rating for each spring. In your case, you can go with the 9 pound S152-9. 18 pounds of support should be fine, you probably won't notice that extra pound.
You shouldn't need pliers to install the coil, but if that makes it easier for you then that's the way to go. I usually just pull it back by hand.
