Re: Metal Window Channel Balance Replacement

A handy person from Orland Hills, Illinois says:
We have several windows that need parts. If you can supply the part in the photograph, I will take the other windows apart to determine the channel lengths needed. I also need the black top sash guide. Do you have any parts for storm windows or plastic trim that holds the screens in place?

With this combination of attachments, you could have either an S380-28 or S385-28 channel balance. You need to measure as shown below. The Series 380 has a 1" bottom attachment, and the Series 385 has a 1-3/32" attachment. You'll also need a 2740 spring strength option for the balances that you purchase.

Thank you and let us know if you have any other questions or concerns.

Hi Casey;

The bottom attachment is definitely over 1" and does appear to be 1 3/32" so I should order the S385-28 channel balance with 2740 spring strength. Would you agree and if for some reason it doesn't fit, can I return for a refund?

Thank you,

George

If your bottom balance shoe measures close to 1-3/32" as you mentioned, then you may want to go for the Series 385 balance. Take one more look and confirm your measurements match up with ours. If everything looks good then you should be ok to go.

If the part happens to not work out for you, you may review our full return policy here.

Hi Casey... The Series 385 balances worked great, THANK YOU! I will be ordering replacements for the rest of our home. There are no manufacturer markings on any of the double hung windows, but the Kitchen slider has "GAPCO" stamped on the lock, just in case this is of any help. I am looking for a few more parts and I'll attach photos...

  • need nylon glides for sash, 3 per side/6 per sash
  • need top sash nylon stop, 2 per sash
  • need metal sash lift, 2 per sash
  • need hard plastic screen retainer, 1 at each jamb
  • need metal screen pull, 2 per screen

If you are able to help with any of these items, please let me know...

Thanks again, Geo M

Hello! I'm very glad to hear that our Series 385 worked for you. As for the additional parts you need, I'll go through them one at a time. Looks like your photos came in reverse order, so we'll be going from right to left.

  • This part is known as a top sash guide. In terms of design, yours looks very similar to our 18-166. However, you'll have to compare our dimensions to your own to confirm that they line up.
  • I'm not sure what this part is called, exactly. I've always called it a "J Guide." Unfortunately, I've never been able to find a good source for it. I'm afraid that we can't supply it at this time.
  • We don't sell screen retainers like this. They're hard to supply since every company has their own idea of how they're meant to be designed, and even then they change that design every couple years. Because of this, we recommend using smaller individual clips like our 70-180 along with a 33-020 screw and distributing them evenly around your screen. This is how they did it back in the day and it's a method we believe still works well.
  • This screen pull looks like our 70-018, but we carry others you may be interested in. You can see our complete selection here.
  • This looks like an older style latch. These aren't really made much anymore. The closest option we have is likely our 90-138, but I'm not sure if it will work. I'm sorry that we can't offer a better match.

Hopefully this information has helped. Please let me know if you have any questions about the above points.
