Replacement coil balances for my window
Which kind of coil balances do I need to fix my window that will not stay up?
Do I need to replace both sides?
Hello there. This is a 15-191 Pivot Shoe, which works with either 3/8" thick Series 165 Coil Balance springs or the 1/2" thick Series 160 springs. Measure the thickness of your old springs to determine which you need. Yes, it is best to replace the balances on both sides of a window. Let us know if you have further questions. See the guides on this page.
Housing as it is cracked Can you give me the part number this also.
If the coil springs you're showing me are damaged, and the window isn't holding up, then yes, you have to replace them. Again, you have to determine which coils you have based on their thickness (1/2" or 3/8"). That will determine the appropriate housing also. Also, for each individual coil you have to choose a spring weight. See the video on this page. Just give me the exact weight of the window sash, and I can work all of that out for you.
Very confusing...So does that mean I buy the springs separately and the housing separaetly....is that what you are meaning?
So the window is 19.8 lbs.
One of the existing coils says 4.5 # (the upper coil) and the other coil says 5.5#.
Now I am not sure if I need 2 or 3 coils since when mine broke it came all undone. I only have 2 right now.
The coil thickness is 1/2 in.
I hope I have given you enough info now
Thank you for your patience.
These coil balance systems are modular. You only have to replace what is broken. The number of coils per side really doesn't matter, so long as 1) it's the same amount of weight support on both sides, and 2) that total is within 1 pound of the exact sash weight. Perhaps you are getting confused because I listed on this page a video that shows how to remove and replace a 'triple' coil system--that just so happens to be the amount of coils in the system shown in the video. The principles the video shows would apply to a single coil system, a double, even a quad system. It's just there to show you how to do it.
If your sash weighs exactly 19.8 pounds, then you need the S160-04 4.5 pound spring and S160-05 5.5 pound spring, one each for both sides of the sash. This would give you 10 pounds (4.5 + 5.5) of support on both sides of the window, for a total of 20 pounds of overall support--more than close enough to the exact sash weight.
For new coil covers, use the 15-205 Double Supports.
Great! Let us know if you need anything else.
