Suggestion

The distance between the jamb hole ( Balance hook goes in) and the take out clip is about 25 inches. How a 28-inch-long sash balance will fit? I wish, I could put a measuring tape against jamb hole and take out clip and take a picture and send it to you, but I cannot, there is not enough distance for the camera. In some pictures I am showing sash balance hook pulled out slightly. The videos I watched showed hook in the jamb hole and the other end to the take out clip. In my case hook is in the jamb hole and the other end is hanging down along the jamb. In my case if I try towards take out clip, the end goes past the clip. Can I use your 28 inch series 380. The length of my sash is 28 inch metal part and 2730 stamped on it. Need more information, please let me know.

Thanks,I tried your suggestion with the other side pointing towards clip, I could not insert the hook. Now let me ask you 28-inch series 380, has shoe width 1 inch, same as mine, it is winged, mine is un-winged. 28-inch series 395, has shoe width 1 1/8 inch greater than mine, it is un-winged, so is mine. Suggest me which one matches more closely with mine.

Thanks,
Ajit

Hello,

The channel balance shown in your photo resembles the S395-28 (2730) with a winged top and non-winged bottom attachment. It is possible that your bottom fitting may be worn down, so you could also try measuring another balance to confirm the correct depth.

As for the issues you're having with installation, take a look at the video below showing how these balances are installed. Your photo of the balance installed does show that it is upside down. The winged fitting would need to be on top, which is the part that engages with a take-out clip like our 16-002 to remove them. The pulley clip would go in the cutout in the jamb, creating tension as the balances are moved up in down once installed below the sash. We can't say why they might have been flipped in your window but this is the only way that these balances are meant to be installed.

Thanks, Paul,

Both shoes measure one (1) inch in width. I will prefer width of the shoe over it being winged/ non-winged so long jamb has a constant width, top to bottom.

My house has more than a dozen windows, all of them are installed the same way as shown in the pictures.

In that case, you could also consider the S351-28 (2730) channel balances. It has the same 1" deep non-winged bottom fitting but the top is also non-winged. In our experience, the bottom fitting is more of a deal breaker than the top as long as they are installed as shown in our video. If you decide to give them a try, you're welcome to review our return policy here just in case you run into any trouble.

Hi Paul,

What about 28-inch series 380 (S380-28) instead?

The choice is ultimately up to you but we recommended the S351 because the bottom fitting has the same non-winged 1" shoe as your original assembly. The S380 has winged top and bottom fittings. They could still work but using any balance that differs from the originals has a chance of experiencing problems down the line. In our experience, the bottom fitting plays a larger role than the top.

Paul, Thanks,

Can you please tell me the function of the guides, also do the balancers move up and down with the sash?

Sincerely,
Ajit

The winged fittings are used to stabilize the balance in the track, which is needed for some windows but not others. The configuration is determined by the manufacturer based on the exact specifications of the window. The balances are help in place below the sash with top sash guides, which allows them to move up and down with the window while under tension from the pulley cord.
