pivot lock shoes for simonton double hung windows

A home owner from Maryland says:

Hello,

I need pivot lock shoes for our Simonton double hung windows which were installed in 2010.

I am not sure about the part number but i am hopping that you will be able to identify it from the photos. Pivot lock shoe looks like a spring and my dimensions are- thickness sideways 1.26 in, width 0.90 in, pivot bar thickness 0.322 x 0.131 in.

Thank you,

AJ

The old Simonton brand coil balance assembly is no longer made, unfortunately. The good news is that we have two possible solutions for you to consider.

The first is our 15-192 pivot shoe, along with our Series 170 coil spring (and other parts related to its store page). This is a Certainteed brand part but I have had customers in the past tell me that they got it to work after grinding down the front of the face, which sticks out just a little too far for this window.

The other option is a more modern replacement that I think works just as well, if not better, since it's not prone to breaking in half like your old one is. The video below will go into more detail. This will explain exactly what parts you need to buy and how you can install them in your window. Just note that you will need the exact weight of your sash on hand in order to calculate the proper spring strength. You want to divide that weight by how many springs support the sash, then pick accordingly.

Thank you Tom.

Would it be possible to learn which coil spring should i use with 15-259 pivot shoe please?

It looks like 10JS is written on the coil spring (see attached image). I also weighed the window 17.9 lb). Which one is better S159-9 or S159-10?

Thank you again,

AJ

Your old stamp of 10JS tells me that it's rated for 10 pounds per spring, however that's a little heavy for a sash that only weighs 17.9 pounds. I think a better option would be either our S159-8 or S159-9.

The S159-8 carries 8.5 per spring, giving you 17 pounds of total support. The S159-9, meanwhile, carries 9.5, giving you 19 pounds of support total.

Both are off by a pound and I think both will work equally well. I don't think you'll notice a pound of difference any more than you noticed two pounds, so ultimately it's up to you which one you go with.

A home owner from Maryland says:
I will go with the S159-9. Thank you Tom.
