Certainteed Coil Balance inquiry

Quick Learner
I have 22 year old Certainteed windows, I have 1 that's 31x57 ish. and the balance coil broke. The old one that's still good looks like a figure 8 (almost broken also) and the other one is the broken one. The plastic piece it hangs on is 1.25 x 1.5 inches. The window seems heavy 9 ish pounds.

Hello,

We'd be happy to help but we would like to see photos of the pivot shoe that your coils springs attach to, which will help us narrow down your options. See the related videos to assist you in the meantime. Thank you!

This is the shoe, the coil hangs on it.

Thanks for getting back to us but these are the cover and barrel for the coils. The pivot shoe is the part that installs below the coils inside the window jamb. See an example in the video below.

Do you have any suggestions when the window is stuck and will not pop out? We tried like the video to remove one side first, but it does not budge.

You may have a pivot shoe with an enclosed cam. See an example below. These shoes are trickier to deal with because there is no opening for the pivot bar to slide out of. You'll follow the same process to remove the sash but you'll need to angle the sash and use some elbow grease to pop one side out at a time. Unforutnately, there is no easy trick to this and even professionals have trouble with them at times but I can assure you that it will come out.

Here is a picture of the Pivot.

For Certainteed windows, we offer the 15-192 pivot shoe that uses the S170 and S171 coil springs, along with the parts listed under the related items section of the 15-192 product page. Please note that some customers have reported that they needed to shave the front of the shoe down to install it in their window jamb.

We also offer a conversion video shown below that works for both Certainteed and Simonton windows that use this type of assembly. Take a look and review the full process below to see which option you'd prefer for your repair.

would I keep the old coils - if not what coils go with the pivot you showed me. Thanks

You would need the S159 coil springs shown in the video included in our last response. You'll need to weigh your window sash to determine the corresponding strength options for the new coil springs.

Hi I have one more question - my original post included pictures of coils/barrels and covers that were I believe free floating (not screwed in) (sorry I took them out a while ago) they were probaly sitting ontop of the other coil and pivot shoe that are attached at the bottom of the window.  My questions is... the window is heavy, around 20 pounds, do I need a double coil unit instead.  I don't understand how my current double system works since they were not attached to the sides of the frame.

Based on your sash weight, I'd suggest using one S159-04 and one S159-05 on each side with the 15-256 double support if you decide to go with the 15-129 conversion shown in our video.

If the covers of your original balance are broken, the conversion would be our best option since the covers used with the 15-192 have been discontinued.
