Need to Replace Balance Assembly

A quick learner from Canton, MI says:
Our Simonton double hung window won't stay up and after removing the sash I see that the balance assembly is cracked. Not sure what replacement I should get and attached photos.

We should be able to help. Before I recommend anything, can you tell me how thick the coil springs are? Can you also show me a photo the pivot shoe they connect to?

A quick learner from Canton, MI says:
Thanks for the reply. Attached are photos of the coil springs and pivot shoe. There a total of three (3) coil springs and they are 7/16" thick. Two springs are stamped #5.0 35" and one is #4.0 35".

Thanks in advance for your quick review and reply.

Thank you. This pivot shoe isn't made anymore but I believe you can use the 15-199 to replace it. Look over its dimensions and let me know you agree.

I'd also like you to confirm the thickness of the springs, just to be safe. We only have two options that could replace this: the Series 160, which is 1/2" thick, and the Series 165, which is 3/8" thick. Yours falls directly between them so I'm not sure what to go with.

A quick learner from Canton, MI says:
The pivot shoe looks good and I believe the Series 160 will work best. The coil springs sit in a plastic housing assembly which is what was cracked. Do these coils come in that assembly?

Tom from SWISCO responded:

They do not, but since you have the 1/2" thick spring I recommend the 15-150T triple spring support. This is designed to carry three Series 160 springs.

Thanks. Last question... which balance weight should I choose:
3.5 lb 4.5 lb 5.5 lb 6.5 lb 7.5 lb
9 lbs 10 lbs

Tom from SWISCO responded:

Looking at the photo of your spring stamps, I see they're #5.0 and #4.0, which indicates a 5 pound spring and 4 pound spring. The Series 160 only comes in pound-and-a-half increments. 5.5 and 4.5 might be too strong for you.

I would double check the spring thickness to make sure you don't have the 3/8" thick Series 165 instead. I feel like details are starting to build up to point to that spring as the better option. The triple spring cover designed to work with it, which is our 15-205, even has the same curved top as yours.

If you are positive that your springs are 1/2" thick, then let's do a little math. Since your old balance system uses two 5 pounders and one 4 pounder on each side, that indicates  sash weight of 28 pounds. That's the mark we want to hit.

That means, using the Series 160, you want to go with two 4.5 springs and one 5.5 spring on each side. That would be a total of four 4.5 pounders and two 5.5 pounders split up between both balances, which adds up to 29 pounds of support. An extra pound won't be the end of the world and I don't think you'll notice a difference.
