Coil Balances ID

These are photos for Simonton windows new in 2005. The coils have have 3.0 on one and 4.0 on the other, so I'm assuming they are 7lb, 2 coil units. The dimensions on your series 140 look correct. It looks like you could use a single coil replacement of the correct lb instead of a 2 coil. I have 2 windows of the same size that need fixing up.The sashes weighs 18.2lbs each. I will need 2 left and 2 right coils. Do I need to change the pivot bar too? What would you recommend?

Hello there. This does not look like our Series 140 system to me. Can you tell us the width of the coil springs? Can you show us the shoe they attach to. We should be ablet o narrow it down from there.

Hello, thanks for the response. The coil springs are 3/8" wide and photos of the shoe. Thanks.

Thanks for getting back to me. This looks like a 15-199 Pivot Shoe. For 3/8" coil springs, you can use the Series 165 springs. Now, there is a discrepancy here between the stamps on your old springs and the sash weight. You say the old springs were stamped #3 and #4, respectively. Was there but one of each on both sides of the sash? To me me this would suggest you have 7 pounds of support on both sides, for a total of 14 pounds of support. If that's so, you could just the single coil, S165-7 7 pound spring, on both sides of the sash for a replacement.

However, you state the sash weighs just over 18 pounds. That would require more support, as you always want the overall spring weight support to be within 1 pound of the actual sash weight. Did you ever have support keeping the window open prior to the old springs breaking? if so, you'd want the 9 pounds of spring weight instead on each side of the sash. I'd weigh the sash again to be certain you have it right.

For a new coil cover, see the 15-204. Finally, for the pivot bars, if the old ones are undamaged you can reuse them. Otherwise, the 15-199 works with a few different kinds. Send us photos of your old bars so we can ID them.

Dear Bob, good thinkin on your part. I took the mangled springs apart and found there is a third coil with #4 on it, so total total 11lbs. Re-weighing the sash I got 18.8lb. Sent more pics to give you more of an idea of size. I would like to replace all the parts and would prefer complete assemblies if possible. Thanks, Brian.

Thanks for confirming the sash weight. If the sash weighs exactly 18.8 pounds, and it turned out there was more coils than you thought in the original setup, I think we're just safe proceeding off the weight. Now, unfortunately all these parts are sold separately and not as a set, but I can explain what you need. The pivot shoe is the 15-199--note if your old one is undamaged you could just reuse it. For the Series 165 3/8" coil springs, use the S165-5 5 pound spring and S165-4 4 pound spring, one each on both sides of the window sash. This would give you 9 pounds of support on both sides, for a grand total of 18 pounds of support--being within a pound of the actual sash weight works just fine, and it does not matter how many coils your window used originally so long as you are properly accounting for the weight support needed. For new coil covers, see the 15-204 Double Supports.

Again, for the pivot bar if you need them we'd need to see the originals to identify them.

Let me know if you have further questions!
