The measurement between the screws on the handle (attaching it to the door) is 4" (or close to that). The screws to the mortise plate are about 9", much larger than most I've seen. This is a keyless lock that needs to be replaced. The latch on the inside does not latch, can this be switched out for a lock with a key?
