I purchased this to replace the handle I had because the lock broke. I'm having a hard time figuring out where to break the tail end pieces off (Step 4). Is it best to just break them off one by one on each piece where the marks are until I get the correct lengths for both?

Interior handle is secured to the exterior handle with thorough bolts from the interior handle through the two holes that have the black grommets as shown in the picture, through the door's frame and into the aligned bolt holes in the exterior handle. The distance is 3 15/16. The key hole needs to be in the center of the 3 15/16. They key hole is centered between the install holes. Look at the broken one I sent you on the handle there is one hole.
