I need to replace some spiral window balances where the metal spiral has rusted out. The windows are PGT WinGard (series SH 700, I believe - the label says "PGT - Single Hung - SH - 701"). Hello, I have Patriot tilt-in windows, that indicate on the frame 92 which I take it means they were made in 1992. I need a "spiral balance tension tool". Can you tell me which exactly which tool to purchase that will help me open my windows more smoothly? Thank you

Single hung, double pane, aluminum frame. The counter balance looks like the picture on your 'swisco.com' opening page, just left of the lower picture. Spiral balances need to be charge after installing them into a window. Charging simply means rotating the spiral part of the balance a couple of times to strengthen the pull of the balance. I recently purchased a 2 family house. I identified the window balances as the 600 series spiral balance. It just seems strange to me that none of the windows will stay up in the entire house! I just got your "spiral charger" for my tilt windows. Here is what I have to work with: Each sash weighs 23lbs. There are TWO 5/8 spirals on each side for both the top and bottom (total 8 spirals for each window). TOP sashes are 4pcs 5/8" x 20" "red" BOTTOM sashes are 5/8" x 22" "blue" Thes ... (cont.)

You will have to charge the balances, I usually give the spiral three to four turns to start. I then take precaution by trying the window sash to see if it will operate properly. Then I adjust it accordingly, adding more turns as needed.

I am currently replacing spiral balances that keep breaking. They have a red tip, should I buy a stronger grade, Possibly blue tip, to stop them from breaking so easily?
